Russia will respond with unspecified retaliatory measures if Austria pursues membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, a senior Kremlin official warned Thursday, escalating tensions over Europe's shifting security landscape.

Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of Russia's Security Council, accused Vienna of abandoning its long-held neutrality and warned that Moscow would treat Austria no differently than Sweden and Finland, which joined NATO last year.
