The family of a man who died by suicide in the Jefferson County Jail is suing, alleging staff did not protect him after the family raised alarm.
Jimmy Aaron Boothe, 42, killed himself in the jail in April after repeated attempts to end his life. The lawsuit alleges Boothe was taken off suicide watch after two weeks in jail despite clearly being suicidal and continuing to tell relatives he wanted to die.
“What is unusual about this case is the sister and daughter kept calling the jail telling them he was suicidal and still they did nothing to avoid this tragedy,” said the attorney for Boothe’s estate, Jon Goldfarb.
There have been at least five inmate deaths reported at Jefferson County Jail this year. Last month a 43-year-old man and a 46-year-old man were found dead in their cell
