A driver from Chilliwack is facing a Motor Vehicle Act charge and fine after he crashed his dump truck into an SUV and spilled a load of coal into a nearby river.

The BC Highway Patrol says the crash happened along the Crowsnest Highway around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

“The crash involved a dump truck that jackknifed into its own trailer and subsequently collided with a BMW sedan carrying two men from North Vancouver and Burnaby, respectively,” Mounties explained.

Police say the crash victims only sustained minor injuries.

The BMW was totalled, and the dump truck spilled coal into the Skagit River.

The BCHP says the provincial Ministry of Environment is monitoring the situation and working with the truck company on appropriate cleanup for the spill.
