Students are going back to school in Rhode Island , which means after a freewheeling summer, motorists will have to tap the breaks to avoid a ticket from one of the growing number of school zone speed cameras in the state.
Six municipalities, including most of the state's largest cities, have at least one school zone speed camera. and a handful more are considering automated traffic enforcement.
The General Assembly authorized school zone speed cameras in 2016. At the time cities were already allowed to install cameras at intersections under a 2005 law for ticketing motorists who run red lights.
