BOSTON (SHNS) - Secretary of State William Galvin is serving as the state's chief executive Thursday and into Friday, his office said, a function of Gov. Maura Healey and Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll both being out of Massachusetts.

Galvin's office said at about 1:45 p.m. that Galvin "has been informed that he is now serving as Acting Governor" and expects to serve in that role until Friday afternoon. When the governor is away, office duties fall to the lieutenant governor. When both are away, the line of succession flows next to the secretary of state.

Healey's office, which has made it a practice to not disclose out-of-state travel in advance, did not immediately respond to a question about Healey's and Driscoll's whereabouts Thursday afternoon.
