CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - Thursday marks the 14th anniversary of Tropical Storm Irene, which caused significant flooding in western Massachusetts, particularly affecting Franklin County.

On August 28, 2011, Tropical Storm Irene made landfall, bringing heavy rainfall that led to the rapid rise of the Deerfield River. The flooding threatened local landmarks such as the Bridge of Flowers and the Iron Bridge in Shelburne Falls, resulting in the evacuation of 300 people.

The storm's impact was felt across Franklin County, where the Bridge of Flowers was closed for about a week, and the Iron Bridge remained closed for months until it was deemed safe. Other areas in western Massachusetts also experienced significant flooding.
