CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - Massachusetts drivers may soon face a ban on tinted license plate covers, following initial approval of a new bill in the state House.

The proposed legislation aims to prevent drivers from using tinted or 'smoked' covers to obscure their license plates, which can hinder the readability of the plates and potentially allow drivers to evade electronic tolls.

State law mandates that license plates must remain clean and legible at all times.

"The whole purpose of having license plates is to be able to identify an automobile or the owners of an automobile," said Rep. Carlos Gonzalez, a Democrat from Springfield. "And it's a tool for our police departments as well as for residents to be able to get information of somebody that may have had an accident."
