HMRC is urging people to 'stay alert' over tax refund scams. Millions of people who are doing self-assessment tax returns are being warned to watch out for bogus offers after tens of thousands of scam reports were made in the year up to the end of July.

People should report any suspicious emails, texts or calls to help stop fraudsters in their tracks, the Government agency said.

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) says fraudsters often impersonate tax officials, pretend to be offering refunds or demand urgent payments as a way of getting hold of personal and financial information.
