RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) - A Richmond family grapples with the stress of having a newborn in the NICU while also planning the funeral of the mother, who was shot and killed just nine days after giving birth.

“This is something that has impacted multi-generations in their family,” said Amanda Lynch, a family cousin.

34-year-old Johnnita Russell was shot to death Sunday night in a home on Hunt Avenue, just one day before her birthday.

“[She was] Really, really looking forward to being a new mom and being a girl mom. It’s just unfortunate that she wasn’t able to really relish in that experience in the way that she wanted to,” Lynch said.
