AKRON, Ohio – The Akron Zoo’s white-cheeked gibbons, Parker and Milo, on Thursday selected a name for their baby boy.

The zoo asked community members to vote on one of five possible names for the baby gibbon earlier this month. The names that received the most votes, Leuco and Coda, were presented to the gibbon family for enrichment on Thursday morning. The item with Leuco on it was touched first, making it the chosen name.

Leuco (pronounced Loo-koh), is derived from the white-cheeked gibbon’s scientific name, Nomascus leucogenys, according to the zoo.

Leuco was born on June 27 to the zoo’s adult female gibbon, Parker, and male gibbon, Milo. This is the second baby born to the gibbons. The couple’s first baby, a female named Lolani, was born in December 2021. Lolani resides in the Akr
