MOBILE, Ala. (WKRG) — Barbara Drummond and Spiro Cheriogotis are off to the Mobile mayoral runoff election, but a local political analyst says both candidates can’t be too pleased with the numbers from Tuesday’s election.

Barbara Drummond came out on top with 33.7% of the votes.

“Not a bad showing, but not a great showing,” local political writer Quin Hillyer said.

He says that while Drummond was the top vote-getter, her total was not overly impressive for the only Black candidate in the race in a majority African-American city.

“It makes her competitive in the runoff,” Hillyer said. “I think that people overestimate the degree of racial polarization in the voting, but still, she’s probably a slight underdog.”
