SURRY CO., N.C. – The Surry County Board of Elections chair resigned from his position Thursday night, after he was arrested and charged with child abuse. Police in Wilmington arrested James Yokeley earlier this month, after he told them he found pills in ice cream he bought at a Dairy Queen for his two granddaughters.
Investigators looked at surveillance footage, and they say it was Yokeley himself who put the pills in the ice cream. Those were later determined to contain MDMA and cocaine. The two little girls were not hurt and didn’t ingest the pills.
Yokeley was appointed chair of the Surry County board of elections earlier this year. In his resignation letter, Yokeley says he remains “confident that (he) will be exonerated of all accusations…against (him).” Yokeley is out of jail on
