A meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russia’s Vladimir Putin is unlikely to materialize, according to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, even though it was touted earlier by U.S. President Donald Trump.
“Apparently a meeting between Zelenskyy and Putin won’t happen, unlike what has been agreed between President Trump and Putin,” Merz told reporters Thursday near Toulon, France.
The White House had previously said it believed Putin agreed to a meeting with the Ukrainian president, and that planning was “underway.” But the Kremlin never confirmed their commitment and no summit has yet been scheduled. On Monday, Trump conceded he didn’t “know that they will meet.”
