Since 1961, when we entered the Yale Law School together, Oliver Henkel, known by many friends from coast to coast as “Pudge,” and I formed what amounted to a lifelong friendship that resulted in the Henkel and Hart families, wives Sally and Lee and our children, enjoying several vacations together.
Sally and Pudge helped a great deal in my two United States Senate campaigns, and when I campaigned for the Democratic Party’s nomination for President in 1984, Pudge took a leave of absence from his successful law practice to manage my campaign.
Only in retrospect now do I fully appreciate how close our personal and family relationships had become. Pudge, who died Aug. 25, was one of the finest human beings it has been my pleasure to know in a long lifetime. His word was solid gold. His loya
