Friends, family, admirers, community members, emergency personnel and government officials gathered Thursday morning to celebrate the mural honoring the life and legacy of four-time Grammy Award winner Deniece Williams.

The favorite daughter of Gary returned with a life-giving force and bountiful love for the city that raised her, which has never left her, even in stardom. Situated at 25th Avenue and Broadway, across from Charlie’s Coney Island, in Gary, Williams’ mural greets every car cruising down Broadway from the Frank Borman Expressway with a bright smile.

Williams is still active in the Gary community, from attending events to speaking with government officials about her vision for the city. She’ll host the second day of the 2300 Jackson Street Block Party on Satur
