GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — After months of anticipation and outcry, Governor Gretchen Whitmer on Tuesday called for a special election for a critical seat in the Michigan Senate.

The seat, which encompasses portions of three different counties in Michigan's bay area, including cities like Bay City and Midland, has been vacant for roughly seven months. Then-State Sen. Kristen McDonald Rivet (D) resigned in January to take her seat in Congress.

"Today, I am calling a special election for the 35th Senate District that represents parts of Bay, Midland, and Saginaw counties," Whitmer said in her announcement.
