The Tempe City Council’s meeting Thursday was cancelled after officials said a safety concern forced members of the public to evacuate the council chambers.

Tempe officials learned of a threat that put the audience, council and city staff in danger shortly before 6 p.m., the meeting’s scheduled start time. City officials did not specify what the threat was.

At 6:25 p.m., Tempe Police informed the crowd there was a safety concern and the meeting will be rescheduled for a later date.

No city official or member of the audience was hurt, according to city communication officer Kris Baxter-Ging. Further reasoning for evacuation was not offered to the public.

This is the first time a Tempe City Council meeting has ever been cancelled, according to Baxter-Ging.
