Dispelling the darkness of abject sorrow with the light of Jesus’ love was the persuasive theme Friday morning at an “Odessa Strong” memorial celebrating the spirits of seven people who died and 25 who were wounded at the hands of a spree killer here on Aug. 31, 2019.

About 60 adults and 80 children listened as Kelby Davis, mother of a 17-month-old baby who was wounded, came forward with her family in the Kidz Korral Daycare Learning Center Chapel at 4500 N. Grandview Ave.

“Is anyone scared of the dark?” Davis asked. “What can you do?”

A number of children raised their hands and one called, “Use a flashlight!”

Quoting the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., Davis said, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness.

“Only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate. Only love can do that.”
