GAINESVILLE, Fla. (WCJB) - The Sunshine Genetics Act is bringing together Florida’s top universities and medical partners, including the University of Florida, to advance research into rare diseases in children.

Officials say the aim is to end what’s known as the “Diagnostic Odyssey,” the long, often painful journey families endure just to get answers about rare diseases.

The Sunshine Genetics Consortium unites universities across Florida — including UF, FSU, USF, FIU, and UM — along with hospitals like Nicklaus Children’s and several biotech companies.

The goal is to accelerate medical discoveries, improve access to testing, and expand treatments for children living with rare diseases.
