In light of a Muscogee Nation Supreme Court ruling, Principal Chief David Hill has issued an executive order pushing pause on processing citizenship applications from freedmen descendants.
Dated Thursday, the order instructs the tribe’s Citizenship Board to accept applications from freedmen descendants but not issue them citizenship cards until the tribe’s laws and policies have been updated to reflect a Muscogee Nation Supreme Court opinion that held freedmen descendants are eligible for citizenship.
In its July 23 opinion siding with freedmen descendants Jeff Kennedy and Rhonda Grayson, the Muscogee Nation Supreme Court struck down a 1979 amendment to Article III of the tribe’s constitution restricting citizenship eligibility to in
