NEWPORT, Wash. – A 61-year-old inmate has died in the Pend Oreille County Jail, Chief Wade Nelson of the Newport Police Department (NPD) announced on Friday.

On Thursday, August 28, the inmate was found unresponsive and not breathing by officials. Corrections and medical staff attempted life-saving measures, but he was later pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the NPD, command of the incident has been transferred to the Spokane County Medical Examiner's Office, and an investigation will be conducted into the cause of the inmate’s death.
