IOWA CITY, Iowa (KWWL) — As the University of Iowa football season kicks off on Saturday, fans heading to Kinnick Stadium will notice a change at the gates.
Iowa Athletics has upgraded its entry system, moving away from barcode scanning. Instead, fans will now be able to tap their phones at kiosks to enter the stadium.
Jess Rickertsen, the assistant athletic director for ticketing and premium seating compared the new system to hotel key cards or workplace security access. “It’s much like entering a hotel room or using a security card to gain access, instead of a barcode you’ll be tapping onto our machines and entering the stadium,” Rickertsen said.
The new technology is also intended to reduce ticket fraud; an issue officials say has become more common in recent years.
