MACON, Ga. — This week, Macon-Bibb leaders announced they're moving forward with plans to build a new arena to replace the Macon Coliseum . They put out a request for architects and engineers, and say they plan to make a decision in the coming weeks.

President and CEO of Visit Macon Gary Wheat says his office is thrilled that a new arena is coming to Macon.

"This is what we would call a game changer," Wheat said.

Wheat says this project will allow the city to capitalize on it's central location, and compete with other tourist destinations.

"Our other communities in Georgia that we compete for business against are building new facilities, upgrading their facilities," Wheat said. "So it's time that Macon-Bibb was able to transition and create a new facility that has a better customer
