A former U.S. postal inspector from Pembroke was due in Boston federal court on Friday, Aug, 29, for an initial appearance after being indicted on charges he stole more than $330,000 in cash from packages mailed by elderly victims of lottery scams.
Prosecutors say Scott Kelley, 51, then laundered the money and used it to pay for expensive home improvements and hire escorts he frequented during work hours, federal prosecutors say.
Prosecutors say Kelley exploited his role in the U.S. Postal Inspection Service’s Mail Fraud and Mail Theft Units to intercept nearly 2,000 packages flagged by a crime-prevention program targeting Jamaican lottery scams. Instead of protecting victims, Kelley opened parcels suspected to contain cash and pocketed the contents, prosecutors say.
