GREENSBORO, N.C. — A 64-year-old man was killed Friday evening when his car ran off the road, hit a barrier and crashed into a tree , Greensboro police said.

The victim was identified as William Perry Morgan, a theater professor and director of the Musical Theatre Program at Greensboro College.

Officers, firefighters and Guilford County EMS responded around 5:28 p.m. to the area of Pembroke Road and Chatham Drive. A witness reported that a Ford Focus sedan was traveling east on Pembroke Road when it ran off the roadway at the dead end, struck a barrier and continued into nearby woods, where it hit a tree, according to police.

Morgan died at the scene. Investigators said impairment does not appear to be a factor.
