ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) -- An Elmira church helped families and kids for the upcoming school year at a back-to-school block party, by giving away backpacks on Saturday.

Admission was free for the event at the Living World Church on Lake Street, where more than 300 backpacks were given out to kids in need. Other activities, including live music, and food were at no charge for people to enjoy.

Any backpacks that weren't claimed at the block party will be available at the church, according to Pastor Liam Grzasko, and people can call to arrange for pickup. Pastor Grzasko said that the church plans to have another backpack giveaway next year sometime in August.
