In Santa Cruz and Monterey counties, workers are organizing at a historic pace, signaling local urgency that mirrors national trends. On Aug. 1, workers at Woodstock’s Pizza won their union election by a landslide. Their victory comes as the sixth Starbucks store in Santa Cruz won a decisive victory for unionization in early July and over 300 workers at the Monterey Bay Aquarium won their union election just three months prior.
If every worker had the chance to vote in a union election today, union membership would rise by 60 million. That would push union density from 9.9% to nearly 46% of the U.S. workforce.
