KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Research on an enhanced treatments for HIV will be conducted at the University of Tennessee, thanks to a grant from the National Institutes of Health.
The University of Tennessee Health Science Center said Dr. Ted Cory will work with Dr. Santosh Kumar to use a $154,000 grant to research how to improve antiretroviral dugs, which are typically used to treat people with HIV.
HIV is the virus that eventually leads to AIDS.
Modern antiretroviral therapy has been around for more than 20 years, but the research conducted at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center focuses on penetrating the macrophages cells, a place where the virus likes to hide.
UTHSC said these cells are not the primary targets of current HIV treatments.
