SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Jockey Club Gold Cup began in scary, bizarre fashion, and ended in unlikely fashion at Saratoga Race Course on Sunday.

Meet-leading jockey Irad Ortiz Jr., was knocked out of the saddle on Mindframe about a dozen strides after the gates opened as the result of a chain reaction of contact between horses that started when Phileas Fogg angled sharply to his left.
