STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Since the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, a community fridge in Mariners Harbor has become an essential resource for the neighborhood, providing free, nutritious food to anyone in need. It has also served as a vital support system for families, seniors and individuals facing food insecurity.
The COMEunity Fridge, founded by area residents Alexandra Shoneyin, Folashade Fakoya, Oksana Bento, Nia Simone Smith, Maimouna Faye, Irima Ajang and Jasmine Chong is located at the corner of Forest Avenue and Amity Place.
“I was seeing a lot of disunity in Staten Island and how it has been left out of a lot of conversations across New York City. There is an invisibility around Staten Island,” Shoneyin told the Advance/SILive.com in 2020 .
