CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KFVS) - Dozens of people attended Overdose Awareness Day at Ivers Square in Cape Girardeau on Sunday.

Attendees honored friends and family members that lost their lives to overdoses.

The event is part of International Overdose Awareness Day that started in 2001 in Australia as a way to prevent overdose deaths.

In Cape Girardeau, attendees released balloons and heard from speakers.

Lezlie Fox with We Do Recovery says the event is personal for her, “I went to treatment back in 2015, and I went there with a woman by the name of Lilly. She recovered, and she was healthy and good. For nine years, she was in recovery. And in this past year, she went back to using and, unfortunately, got her hands on some fentanyl and passed away due to overdose. This is a very real thing
