(WKBN) - A new national survey has revealed that when kids say, "I don't want to go to school," it could be a sign of an emotional problem. But there are ways to handle this before school anxiety becomes avoidance.

According to a survey from the Kids Mental Health Foundation, the common reasons children give for not wanting to go to school are not feeling well or being too tired.

There may be something deeper going on, so early conversations matter.

"If a child is afraid about socializing, then we practice social skills together. If they're afraid of the test or the presentation, then we practice or we study," said Ariana Hoet, PhD.

Suggest ways for them to cope instead of letting them stay home.
