BURLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) - WCAX went full color in 1969, and the first same-sex marriages in Vermont happened in 2009.
At the stroke of midnight on September 1, 2009, Bob Sullivan and Bill Slimback exchanged vows in Duxbury - the first couple to tie the knot as Vermont’s new same-sex marriage law took effect.
Though Vermont had opened the door to same sex marriage with the passage of civil unions in 2000, other states legalized marriage before Vermont did. However, Vermont was the first to do so with legislative action instead of a court ruling.
