I Fought the Law aired last night on ITV and viewers are already gipped as they follow the tragic true story of a mother's fight for justice as her daughter's murderer was protected by an ancient law. ‌

In the TV depiction, Sheridan Smith plays Julie Hogg's mother Ann Ming. Julie was murdered at her home in Billingham in 1989 by William ‘Billy’ Dunlop. ‌

Dunlop was acquitted under the double jeopardy law after going to trial twice for her murder as the jury failed to reach a verdict on both occasions, writes Wales Online. ‌

Julie was just 22 at the time of her death, recently separated from her husband and working as a pizza delivery driver.

In November 1989, she was violently sexually assaulted and strangled by her neighbour, Billy Dunlop, and her body was hidden
