CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) - Starting Monday, Sept. 1, South Carolina law enforcement is placing more restrictions on handheld devices in the driver's seat.
Highway Patrol Troopers and other officers deal with thousands of car crashes each year. Trooper Nick Pye with the South Carolina Highway Patrol says distracted driving is a leading cause, alongside impaired and aggressive driving.
"You can be a great driver 99.9% of the time," Pye said. "But that small percentage that you do something wrong, like pick that cell phone up and take your eyes off the road for just a split second, it can ultimately cost you your life."
