While the number of auto thefts taking place in Halton, Ontario and across Canada may be going down, local and provincial police said they have no plans to halt the pressure on the organized crime groups responsible.

Halton police noted that during the first six months of 2025 there were 451 auto thefts across the region.

This represents a 31 per cent drop when compared to 657 auto thefts during the same period last year.

These figures are in stark contrast to the number of auto thefts that took place in previous years.

For example, March 2022 alone saw nearly 100 vehicle thefts reported in Halton, with a total of 1,302 vehicles taken that year, according to Halton police.

The next year would see similar numbers .

The more recent downward trend is not limited to Halton.
