Three people were trapped in a wrecked SUV on the Niagara-bound QEW Sunday evening.

The vehicle rolled multiple times before coming to rest in a ditch at the side of the highway in Lincoln.

Ontario Provincial Police said via social media that shortly after 7 p.m., the highway was closed to traffic near Victoria Avenue. Travellers were advised to find an alternative route as emergency crews responded.

Niagara West fire and emergency services firefighters freed the injured passengers from the badly damaged Pontiac SUV and Niagara emergency medical services paramedics transported them to an out-of-region hospital with injuries believed to be serious.

Following the crash, more than a dozen people stopped to help free passengers trapped in the vehicle and comfort them until emergency crews
