Labor Day became a national holiday in 1894, signed into law by President Grover Cleveland.

The holiday emerged from the efforts of labor activists in the late 19th century, during the Industrial Revolution, to secure recognition for the contributions of workers.

A ccording to the U.S. Department of Labor, the day is dedicated to celebrating the power and spirit of the American worker.

Government offices and banks are closed today, and there is no mail service. However, many stores remain open, some offering holiday sales.
