Residents in Darwin can now arm themselves with pepper spray as part of the Northern Territory government's efforts to fight back against crime.

A new law, which came into force on Monday, legalised the use of oleoresin capsicum (OC) spray - commonly known as pepper spray - for self-defence by those living in the NT.

As part of an initial 12-month trial, OC spray will be made available over the counter at approved dealers such as The Gun Box, Fishing & Outdoor World, Rod & Rifle, and Katherine Camping & Fishing, among other outlets.

Locals wishing to arm themselves with the substance will have to clear a legal check, which includes signing a declaration they do not have a criminal record, and buyers are restricted to purchasing either two 10millilitre or 45millilitre bottles - or one bo
