This Wednesday, hundreds of newcomer students in Sudbury are beginning school in a new country, navigating new experiences such as learning English and making friends. For them, back-to-school jitters take on an entirely different meaning.
Among them is the Lai family from China. Veronica Lai is enrolling her twin boys, Felix and Alex, into MacLeod Public School while she completes her Master of Business Administration at Laurentian University.
To support students like these, local school boards have introduced programs and supports to help ease the transition. For example, the Lai family met an English language teacher (ELT) at the school last week for orientation and language support.
MacLeod is part of the Rainbow District School Board , the largest school board in Northern Ontar
