EAST LANSING – Michigan State’s first four possessions of the 2024 season featured two punts, an interception and a fumble.

The start this fall was much more productive.

The Spartans scored touchdowns on three of their opening four drives with the first two both spanning 10 plays and more than 70 yards in last week’s 23-6 win against Western Michigan.

“Offensively, the quick start was good to see,” coach Jonathan Smith said on Monday. “Some of the physicality in the run game in the first half, I did think up front guys did a nice job at the execution those first two drives.”

A crisp start led to a 21-0 lead in the second quarter before Michigan State’s lone points the rest of the way came on a safety. The next eight possessions were empty before kneeling out the clock for a win.
