SAN MARCOS, Texas — San Marcos plans to expand its regional airport after the city council approved a nearly $1.7 land purchase from the federal government.

The city is buying about 170 acres next to San Marcos Regional Airport from the U.S. Department of Labor, located at 2800 Airport Highway 21 and 1285 William Pettus Road. Officials say the long-term goal is to support larger aircraft operations and attract new businesses to create jobs in the area.

The purchase also preserves an airport buffer zone established in 2023 to prevent incompatible development like housing that could create noise and safety issues.

The Department of Labor has 180 days to approve the sale. The city already paid a 10% deposit in August.
