FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (KNWA/KFTA) — There was a community gathering on Sept. 1 to share a meal and talk about and advocate for the meaning of Labor Day at Veteran Memorial Park in Fayetteville.

Hershel Hartford, the president of the University of Arkansas Fayetteville Education Association co co-sponsors the annual Labor Day Picnic.

Hartford says Labor Day is important to the United States because it led to changes in and advocates for fair and equitable working conditions.

"It's about workweeks being a five-day, 40-hour workweek. It's about having weekends. It's about making sure that people not only are working in a place that they are comfortable, but they're safe in," Hartford said.
