SLADE, Ky. — A man is dead after a hiking accident in eastern Kentucky on Saturday.

In a social media post , Powell County Search and Rescue said it responded to Whittleton Arch at Red River Gorge around 4 p.m. after receiving a man fell roughly 40 feet from the top of the arch to the rocks below.

Numerous agencies were on the scene to provide a quick response and although the man was alert and oriented, officials said it was quickly apparent that his injuries were critical.

The man was transported to Middlefork Fire Department and later airlifted to a University of Kentucky hospital in Lexington.

On Sunday, Powell County Search and Rescue said the man died while at the hospital.
