BOSTON — The Pirates began August in disastrous fashion. A day after the 2025 trade deadline debacle concluded, Don Kelly’s club blew a nine-run lead, on the road, against the worst team in MLB. They then proceeded to blow a four-run lead the next day, securing a loss in their first series of the month.
The embarrassment in Denver was far from the only low point in August. The Pirates were dominated in Milwaukee, getting outscored 33-6 in a three-game series. Veteran left-handers Andrew Heaney and Ryan Borucki continued to struggle, resulting in both being designated for assignment.
But similar to other months, Kelly’s Pirates successfully prevented things from spiraling out of control.
To go along with the handful of ugly moments, the Pirates also experienced a few positives. Jared Tri
