NEWARK, N.J. (PIX11) – Students in Newark are stepping into a brand new school this year on Tuesday.

The Newark School of Architecture and Interior Design, inside the former St. James Hospital building, was originally supposed to open three years ago. The trade school lets students study plumbing, electricity, HVAC or architecture.

The school will only host freshmen in its first year, adding another grade each year. It’s part of the high school redesign strategy to transform schools in Newark.

Newark Public Schools is in its sixth year of the 10-year plan. Superintendent Roger Leon is expected to make appearances at several Newark schools on Tuesday.
