The northern stretch of the Outer Banks will keep the red flags flying again on Tuesday. The risk level alternates from high to low from Cape Hatteras southward through the Crystal Coast.

If you’re heading to the beach, keep these tips in mind:

Swim only near staffed lifeguard stations—they’re trained to spot trouble before it starts.

Look for the beach warning flags. A red flag means stay out of the water.

Never swim alone. Always go in with a buddy and let someone on shore know your location.

If caught in a rip current, don’t panic. Swim parallel to the shore until you’re out of the current, then make your way back in.
