Officials are investigating an incident involving two small aircraft that crashed at Fort Morgan Municipal Airport in Morgan County, Colorado, over the weekend, leaving one person dead and two others injured.
Multiple agencies responded to the report of the crash on Sunday, Aug. 31, according to the Morgan County Sheriff's Office.
The planes, a Cessna 172 and an Extra Flugzeubau EA300, collided while trying to land just before 11 a.m., the Federal Aviation Administration said on its website.
According to the sheriff's office, the planes caught on fire. There were two people in each aircraft at the time of the incident.
Footage published by news outlet Denver 7 showed the aftermath of the crash, including a damaged plane and the ground covered in black smoke.
One person killed in crash
The Morgan County Sheriff's Office said the Cessna passengers suffered minor injuries from the incident.
A person inside the Extra Flugzeubau EA300 was transported to a nearby hospital. The other individual aboard died at the scene.
The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the case.
"We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the victim in this tragic event. We would like to express our gratitude to all the agencies that helped with this situation," the Morgan County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
"Additionally, we want to thank the citizens who assisted in trying to extinguish the fire until the fire department and first responders arrived on the scene."
Morgan County is about 88 miles from Denver.
