PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (WAGM) - After years of planning, Phase Two of the Presque Isle bypass is finally moving forward.

The project is expected to go out to bid in just a few weeks.

Phase Two will extend the existing bypass from Conant Road to U.S. Route 1 near the Westfield town line.

The new 6.17-mile stretch is designed to reroute heavy tractor-trailer traffic away from downtown, easing congestion, improving safety at high-crash locations, and reducing vehicle emissions.

“The Presque Isle bypass, the latest schedule I’ve seen on that, that is scheduled to advertise mid-October, middle of October. So, advertise this fall, get awarded to a contractor late fall/early winter, and then whether somebody chooses to start work this winter,” said Bob Watson, Northern Region Manager of the Main
