BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - A Bangor-based nonprofit needs your help, and you only need to be over 18 with a high school diploma to assist.
According to Mary Taylor, executive director of Bangor’s Literacy Volunteers, illiteracy is a much larger issue than one may think.
Nationwide, 54% of adults cannot read above a sixth-grade level, with 45 million Americans classified as functionally illiterate.
That’s where Literacy Volunteers come in, improving the reading and writing of native and non-native English speakers for over 50 years.
“We do that through trained volunteers in our community, and we match them,” Taylor explains. “We pair them to work together on whatever that adult needs or wants to learn.”
